Rick LaMont served as expert witness in this case involving timberland valuation and county taxation assessments. Thirteen Oregon counties sued the state, arguing that managing donated forestland for "greatest permanent value" required maximizing timber revenue. Based on his analysis, A Linn County jury awarded approximately $1.1 billion in damages in 2019. This ruling was overturned by the state Court of Appeals in 2022 on the grounds of the definition of greatest permanent value. The counties appealed the reversal, but the Oregon Supreme Court denied this appeal in 2026.
